GENERAL
The International Society of Naturalists, (INSONA), has launched a campaign,
concentrating on the theme, 'No Water No Life'. Possibly the younger generation
may not be witnessed to the scarcity of water or non-availability of potable
water for their well-being. Every year the crisis takes an ugly turn. We can
jointly avert this trend. Few suggestions from INSONA.
"No Water No Life"
Take Action in Your Home To Conserve Water
Bathroom
- Take short showers and save 5 to 7 gallons a minute.
- Don't run the water while shaving, washing your hands or brushing your teeth.
- Don't use the toilet as a wastebasket and don't flush it unnecessarily.
Kitchen
- Don't let the water run while washing dishes.
- Use a self-closing nozzle on your tap (those who can afford can certainly implement it).
Laundry
- Run the washing machine only when full.
- When purchasing a washing machine, consider water consumption as well as energy efficiency.
Garden
- Mix compost into the soil before planting to help the soil retain water.
- Don't over water your lawn or plants. Water before 9 am or after 7 pm.
- Choose from among the many types of low-water-using trees, shrubs, flowers and groundcovers.
- Install drip or trickle irrigation systems for those areas that need watering.
Community
- Encourage the use of water conservation devices
- Be aware of how much water you use. Awareness is the first step in conservation.
- Organize or join in the cleanup of beaches, stream or a wetland.
- If you wash you vehicle at home, do so on the lawn rather than on the pavement.
- Encourage a youth group to start a water conservation program.
